Why does it seem that milestone events seem to happen to some of my favorite Washington area teams? Yesterday "Roid Boy" Bonds hit his tainted milestone moment against the Nationals. Now us Nationals fans will be forever linked to the ultimate baseball Jackass. How much does that suck? Sad thing I could feel it was going to happen weeks ago. Much like when Patrick Roy needed one more win to pass Terry Sawchuk for most NHL wins, who did it come against? My Beloved Washington Capitals. And what happened on opening night in Madison Garden 2006? Brendan Shanahan was two goals shy of 600. Can you guess what happened? I know that milestone moments happen, but why does it have to happen to us?

Maybe I should say "What did you do or going to do for you summer vacation?", since summer is not over yet. Now that the sadness of the Senators loss in the Cup finial, personal stuff and a vacation with my lovely wife, DCSC, is over I will be posting again. First, back to the question. Vacation! Here is what I did.

Not bad from a stock Jeep? Unfortunately it took me 3 tries with the pressure washer to clean all that mud from the radiator. I think DCSC was relieved to miss our last trail ride because of it. That Virginia mud/clay really sticks to stuff. I don't think I will ever get rid of it all.

OK, back in September DCSC and I went to Vegas. While there I decided to put a bet down for the Stanley Cup final. My belief back then was that it was going to be an Anaheim Ducks and Ottawa Senators in the final. I have learned my mistake when it comes to betting. At least for me. Never bet on the team you want to win. It always goes the other way. For some reason the Betting Gods hate me. So being the prudent Chanuck that I am, I thought I would hedge my bets. If for some reason the Betting Gods hates me, the team I pray to win, will win. Otherwise I will be up a couple bucks. Lets hope I am $120 short in a couple weeks.

As noted in a comment by Caps Nut about one of my previous posts, one of the Senators did carry the Wales trophy. I saw this and heard on XM that it was Spezza. His comment was that it was not the ultimate goal, but it should still be treated with respect. This got me to start looking around.

Now my personal superstition started when the Capitals carried it and acted like they won Lord Stanley.

But as I was looking I found a few more examples of what to do and what not to do.

Elation!!

the First one bitch. NBC what the Fuck is your problem! If you don't want to broadcast the entire game why do you insist on screwing with the hockey schedule (insisting on afternoon games on weekend). For those of you north of the border. When today's game went to overtime, NBC switched to Versus. Unfortunately the hotel DCSC and I are staying at does not have Versus. What an annoyance. Lucky for me we are close to ESPNzone. After informing the kid controlling the TVs that the game switched to Versus we were good to go. I was even congratulated by a few guys (slightly sauced) for getting them to switch the channel. There was something good coming out of the switch. I was able to celebrate the win with fellow Senators fans, far from home.

Now to the glow. Don't know what to say other than WOW! Alfie did touch the trophy, but he did not pick it up. So my superstition radar is not in overload. I take one bit of satisfaction that the Devils touched it in 2003 and still won. Four more wins to go. It is going to be real tough against the west. One good thing is that the Duck and Dead Things (red wings) are going to kick each others ass. Might be helpful for us. Here is hoping.

Thanks to a 5-2 and a 4-3 overtime win. The Senators own the HSBC Arena. It feels good, but it is not over yet. Anything can still happen, but it was nice to hear that prior tonight, the Slugs were undefeated when leading by two goals. Way to go boys, keep up the good work!

Title refference in case some of you don't remember it. Gets stuck in my head sometimes.

I am taking each win in stride. We have been here before, but somehow it feels a little different. The Senators look sharper, a closer better team that I have seen in the past. I love the chemistry that this team is showing on and off the ice. The only thing that can spoil the fun is the threat of a strike. Hopefully the powers that be at ScotiaBank Place can settle the possibility of a strike by the arena workers. Hard to got to the Cup finial if you don't have a rink to play in.

On another note, read Scarlet Ice's take on what is happening to Shane Doan. This is getting out of control and I cannot control my anger at what is happening to him. I have always thought he was a stand-up guy and reading what teammates have said about him, backs up that feeling. The Bloc Quebecois has always been a hack organization and this just proves it.

I am not talking about their performance on the ice. Though they didn't show up in the first period. Or at least with my Sens colored glasses, the Devils were outplayed. What I am talking about is their attendance. Where are your fans? Can you only sellout your house when you play one of the other NYC team or Philly? The Devils have THE BEST goalie in the history of the NHL and they cannot even draw a reasonably full house for the second round of the playoffs. Now if it was only a few seat here and there. (like in Detroit, sad as well, but with those prices I can understand) But there was whole rows empty. WTF! I don't how many time I told DCSC that we could have been there. It has been couple years since I was able to go to a playoff game (Caps Fan) and it would have been great to see my 1B team live. I am currently petitioning DCSC for an opportunity to make the trek. Though I take her point that the mojo will not transfer to Jersey. Looks like I will be watching from my Lucky chair, drinking my Molson. Looks like I need to make a beer run before Saturday.

Note to the Toronto media types, that rail on the Capitals for their attendance. You need to shut the F up. The Caps haven't had a wining season in a few years now. It is a growing process, but if we win 3 cups and still can't fill the house duing the playoff then you can might have a leg to stand on.

Yesterday the Eagles announced their plans for the 75th anniversary. One of the things they announced was that they will be wearing throwback jerseys when the play the Lions on Sept 23. These are the uniforms that the team wore their first year. Though I am sure they were not as shiny. I do have to say thank god they are wearing them for only one game. Stay with the green boys. You can dump the black uniforms as well.

Got this little slice of news from Eric on Off Wing Opinion. The NHL will make complete games available for download. Great stuff! Cool to be able to download games that you want to re-live. So far there are only 6 games available from the 2007 playoff run , one from the regular and a few classic games.

But I have a question. Why is the only Sens game available, the only one that the Sens lost? Granted it was a good game. One that the Sens controlled most of, but they still lost it in the end. But what Sens fan in their right mind is going to pay for a NBC broadcast of this game, and what Pens fan can afford it. (at least the fans that still live in Pittsburgh) Now thanks to Russell from the SensUnderground, we know what NBC stands for, "Nothing But Crosby". The entire broadcast was a Crosby Love Fest. Yo NHL, some of us don't want the "second coming" shoved down our throats. As for the Amazon Unbox, put up some good games and maybe I will make a purchase. Something like game 4 or 6 of the 98-99 Eastern Conference final. But until then I think I will wait.

To me this is the beginning of a slippery slope. First hockey teams colors are going to be dictated by the highest bidder? Next we will start seeing NHL players sport ads such as this?

I blame myself for the Sens loss on Saturday. I had prior engagements that I could not get out of. First was DCSC's Great Aunt's 90th Birthday, then was the DC United game. It could not be helped. I had the Sens game DVRed, I thought watching it tape delayed would have the same mojo. I was wrong.
As for the United game that I saw, what can I say except, Ech! What a stinker. Yes it was a high scoring affair, but DC was out played. It is early in the season so I am not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We have a great group of guys here, but I think that the guys have to get familiar with the new coach and new players. Once that happens I am sure things will turn around.

Back to Sens Nation.

I promise to keep to the routine. Watch the game, sitting in the same chair, wearing my Sens gear and drinking down the Molson. Go Sens!

The Playoffs are finally here, and what a beginning. Sens dominate the Pens in the first game. Great game from my point of view. Yes, I am wearing my Sens red glasses. But as a Sens/Caps guy, I must say that the coverage so far on Versus has been annoying. Isn't Versus suppose to be an impartial outlet? They spent the first two periods gushing all over themselves about the "greatness" of the Canadian Diving Team Captain, Crosby. They didn't start to adjust their tune until well into the third. Yo, Versus give a little love to the team that was winning the game. Now the Pens may have been surprised by the intensity of the playoffs, but here is to the Sens keeping the same intensity throughout the series and the playoffs.

On Monday Ed Belfour was arrested again yesterday. Surprise Surprise he got drunk and got himself arrested. I just wanted to share his mug shot.

Today at noon the NHL will conducted it's lottery on what position the teams will pick. Here is what we are looking at right now with the possible top pick. Let's hope that the Caps can find the diamond in the rough and not a rough diamond. Oh, the Caps managed to lose a position. Finished 4th, picks 5th and the 5th team (Chicago) picks 1st.

With one more game left in this season for my beloved Capitals. I have to say I like the way that they are ending at least this part of it. Two wins in so many games. Nice. I love that fact that the Caps again put a monkey wrench in the Trashers playoff picture. How funny will it be if they miss the division title by a single point? I am holding my nose saying this, but Go Lightning!

Last game is against the Bufaslugs. Anyone help me out with a last minute request? Where can I get one of these in XXL?

So now it is a countdown to the beginning of the next season. That one, in my opinion begins on July 1. GMGM get us someone good. We don't want another season of disappointments

A couple hours in Canada.

Last night DCSC and I spent a couple hours in my homeland of Canada. Well we spent a couple hours in the embassy of Canada. That counts right? Thanks to Mr Smooth who gave us the heads up. We attended a showing of "the Rocket" a story about Maurice "the Rocket" Richard. First of all Wow! I personally loved it. I am a fan of most hockey movies, and this was one of the better ones I have seen. The fact it was based on an actual person was an extra bonus. I only know Maurice Richard from the record book and very few anecdotes. The movie was eye opening. It helped me understand my French-Canadian side a little bit more. But even if you are not French-Canadian, this is a great Hockey movie. Interesting to see that fighting and the existence of the league was an issue "back in the day" as well.

I hate Pittsburgh.

Tonight is the last time we have to deal with the Pens this year. Thank God. These guys have the Caps number this year. Well, most years. No matter what incarnation, it always seems we get get hosed by these guys. I am still hoping/praying for a Caps win, but I am not optimistic. The Caps are not a playoff calibre team, and unfortunately the Pens are. But can the Pens win a series without the benefit of the shootout? I don't think so, but that is why they play the game.
Back to tonight. Hopefully the Pens will be looking through the Caps, and the Caps can catch them napping. Here is to a Caps win. Mmm, yaa?

Note to George McPhee; We expect the Capitals to be in the playoffs next year, not just playing the spoiler. This is getting old!

OK, not just beer. Hooray for "Jaws"! Today ESPN announced that Monday Night Football will replace Joe Theismann for Ron "Jaws" Jaworski. I for one am quite happy. I have always been a Jaworski fan. First, as a lifelong Eagles fan he has always been my favorite player. Second he has to be, if not the best, one of the best football analysis on TV. He knows how to break down a game and give it to without the pretentiousness that some former players air. Also, I think the dynamic between him and Tony Kornheiser will only improve the show. Congratulations Jaws.

This past weekend DCSC and I headed back to Philly to see Friends and Family. It is always nice to get back "home". I miss being able to get my Cheese-steak, soft pretzels, and just hanging out in the city. Though I did get a reminder that I do have my other home. On my way to Delaware Ave (Columbus Ave to newbies), a Pick-up pulled up next to me and the passenger shouted "Go Flyers!". See I am a proud Caps fan and have my personalize plate. Also, being that I am from Philly originally I had to shout back "Go Caps, Flyers Suck!". I also added "Its a race to the bottom". Which got me a laugh from them and my passengers. That got me thinking. Can the Caps be so bad the rest the way and end the season the worst team in the NHL this year? The answer, sadly is yes. Pretty much what would have to happen, is the Caps lose the rest of the way, without getting a point. And the Cryers average out at least a point a game. But come on, How likely is that? Sadly, I can see it happen.

What a difference. At the beginning of the season I was hoping we would be in the hunt for the 8th spot in the playoffs. Now I am looking for a bottom 4 finish, and a possible number 1 pick. What a difference a couple months make.

Today the Capitals announced that they resigned Donald Brashear. I know there are those that are skeptical about the need for an enforcer in the "new" NHL, but I believe having a balanced team is absolutely necessary. Balanced, in my book, means having some tough guys on the team. Just look at Anaheim and Nashville. They are top of the list in fighting majors and also the tops in points in the league. Plus you got to love this quote.

"I make no apologies for it," Anaheim GM Brian Burke said Thursday. "That's the way our team is built. If you're going to come into our barn you better be ready for a square dance.

"We made a conscious decision to protect our skill players, provide them with an environment where they can better succeed."

Random Ideas I was able to glean from Center Ice

As I said in a previous post I love my Center ice package. Watching how other hockey cities broadcast and market their teams is interesting. First of all, there's the actual broadcast. I was floored when I noticed some home teams actually conduct interviews with the players on the bench, during the game. Nice to get a feel of the players while the play is going on. Also, they cover the three stars of the games. I like the idea of actually showing the stars on the broadcast. When the Caps win and I am at the game I always stay for the stars. I would like to know who they are for away games as well. Some markets also interview one of the "stars of the game" which fans at the stadium can listen to as well, like San Jose.

I also notice a really cool marketing toy.

It comes from the Edmonton Oilers. It is the "fanboni".

Thank God for the "Center Ice" package. After watching the Caps choke live, I get to watch my second favorite team (Senators) have a great game. 3-0 game against the Bruins. Shots during the Caps game 42 (Panthers) to 18 (Caps), shots during the Sens game 39 (Sens) to 18 (Bruins).

One day I need to see the Sens play in Ottawa and not against the Caps, so I can put all my support behind the Sens.

Maybe they should have called today's game because of a "suspicious package" in the metro.

Other than the first period the Caps looked like shit. Sitting on the side where the Caps shoot twice, the first period was decent, but gezz the next two periods. I needed binoculars to watch the game, since everything was happening on the other side of the ice. The Caps looked like they did too many Irish Car bombs the night before. They were giving the puck to the Panthers every chance the got. Two of their goals in particular were on giveaways when the Caps were heading into the offensive zone. The biggest embarrassment was that the Caps did not get double digits on shots until well into the 3rd. Even Ice girls or cheerleaders will not get people in the building if they put a product on the ice that does this at home.

Guess this explains why the Capitals front office staff did not move in the Kettler Capitals Iceplex on January 13th, like they were told.
Aren't those guy suppose to be working up there? Not watching the team practice. So at the rate the construction guys worked, while I was there, it may be at least another month before we see any move.

Sorry guys and gals. Maybe it is for the best. How much work do you think will get done once they move. Hell, if I worked there my nose would be pressed against the glass as well.

This is sad. In today's Washington Post there was a story of a two year old Boy that was killed while riding an ATV. My Question is? Why in the world is a two year old riding an ATV? Even if it was rated for 6 or older this was plain wrong. Even the comments on the Post's article seemed to have the same feeling of disbelief. I can't believe that the parents were not charged. A kid that probably couldn't even go to "potty" on his own, is riding an ATV. How much you want to bet that the family will now try to sue the ATV manufacturer?

Speaking of suing someone. Look at this. A family while at Disney World are accusing a Disney employee dressed as Tigger of an "unprovoked attack". I watched the video and what it looks like to me is the brat put his arm behind the character and started pulling on the costume. It looks like the person lost their balance and had to turn and pull the kid's hand off him. The "hit" looked like incidental contact while they were turning. This is only my humble opinion, but come one what is going on with people these days? Now this father and son duo with lawyer, is doing the "news" show circuit, and I am sure they will be looking for their payday. Why can't we have more humble heroes like Wesley Autrey, who tried to play down his heroics?

Canadian of the Week; Jan. 8, 2007

Back from my holiday posting break, here comes the first Canadian of the New Year. This week's Canadian was born, May 24, 1938 in Edmonton Alberta. Born to a father of Chinese descent and a mother of Scot-Irish. His family moved to Calgary, Alberta so his father can get treatment at a Veteran's hospital for wounds he suffered during World War II. When he was eleven years old he learned how to play guitar. First playing country-and-western music, but soon switched to Rhythm and Blues. He soon quit school and formed a band called the Shades. According to him, "After a particularly rowdy gig" the band was asked by the Mayor to leave Calgary. He moved to Vancouver where he bought a club called the Elegant Parlour. He played guitar and sang for the house band. The band, Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers were discovered and signed by Motown. The band briefly featured a very young Jimi Hendrix. One of the songs he composed "Does your Mama know about me?" reached 29th on the U.S. pop chart and number 5 on the U.S. R&B chart.

After getting fired from the band, he moved back to Vancouver and started an improv group. While doing improv he met a comedian from Los Angeles who would become his long time partner. They became successful with many comedy albums, that turned into a movie career. In 1985 the team split up, because of artistic differences. Going their separate ways our Canadian had a recurring role on "that 70's show".

In 2003 he was arrested and charged with selling drug paraphernalia. He agreed to plea guilty in exchange with non-prosecution of his wife and son. After spending nine months in jail, he returned to acting on TV and also stared in a Documentary based on his arrest.

Now it was a busy Christmas weekend. DCSC and I drove up to Toronto to catch the Caps play the Maple Leafs. I always have a wonderful time when I am back in Canada and to spend the Christmas holiday was no different. The weather was pretty decent, when the rain stopped. Saturday night was the big night. DCSC and I ate dinner at the Bottom Line in all of our Capitals glory. Strangely and Thankfully we were not the only Caps fans in the house. There was one lone guy wearing a Caps jersey and Nats hat. Nobody said a thing to us, but we did get some strange looks here and there. The Air Canada Centre is a must see. Love the fact that you get real BEER!! And they come in different sizes. Yes the "phone booth" has better selection than they use to, but nothing says Hockey than a large Molson Canadian. We had a great view from our seats, though as a big guy, they were pretty close together. The people around us we nice, especially the guys to our right. DCSC engaged them in conversation when we got there and they couldn't have been nicer. It was interesting that nobody knew about the uniform changes due this January. Now I want to hear if changes are brewing on the Caps front as well?

Toronto is truly a hockey city. We had random people stop us as we walked back to our hotel, asking who won. Everyone knew who Ovie is and they were impressed by them. Though in true Leaf Nation attitude many were in the belief that he soon will be a Leaf. ( Not that I am worrying. Uncle Ted is keeping all that cap room for a reason. Ovie will be getting a huge raise when his contract is up. ) Not everyone wanted all hockey all the time. Our seat mate said he was also a basketball fan and found it difficult to find news about that. Though he did say it was getting better. I personally was impressed that they had Raptors TV, but it was difficult to see anything other than hockey. ( I waited through all the hockey highlights until I saw the Wiz highlights) Not that I am complaining. I wish I had that problem here in DC.

Sadly on Christmas morning we had to head back home. And RACED home we did. I had to get home to catch The Eagles play the Cowgirls. Fortunately we made good time and that we had the Sirius radio. We made it home to watch the second half of the game. And what a game. How about that T.O.!! Eagles 2-0 against Owens and the Girls. Nice!
Looks like he is doing to the Cowboys what he did to the Eagles, 49er's and who's next? But I digress, Thank you Santa for the good sports weekend.

Got to say I had to laugh out loud when I heard on XM's Home Ice that Ilse of Capri did not win the slots license in Pittsburgh. Now I can still daydream of the possibility of a hockey less Pittsburgh. Not that I think it likely. It looks like the NHL is falling all over themselves trying to keep the Pens in Pittsburgh and give Maria Le Pew a big payday. Though the likely hood of him getting $175 million is not looking good right now. Some of the pundits are saying the price will drop to about $100 to $120 million. Still not a bad payday. The drama continues.

This Friday will be the Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils first visit to the Washington DC. Martin Brodeur was instrumental in the outlawing of the Mirrored visor that our beloved Alex Ovechkin was starting to wear. Some of our enterprising Caps fans have come up with an idea to wear mirrored glasses during the pre-game warm-ups . I wish I could be here for it. I so want to get the C.H.I.P.S shades for the game, but DCSC and I are heading up to Toronto to catch the Caps play the Leafs. So I will be TiVoing the game. Hopefully Comcast will show the Caps faithful with their shades.

OK, I know that this has been brought up by OnFrozen Blog and DC Sports Bog, but it is getting out of control. It is getting so bad that some DumbAss thought it was a good idea to yell "fuck the Flyers" during the moment of silence to honor Caps owner Joshua Freeman. Now I Loath the Cryers with the best of them, but really, what the Fuck is wrong with you? Even the Cryers fans were able to keep quiet during a moment of silence.

As for the "o" during the National Anthem. Do you people realize that you NOT in Baltimore? That you are NOT even at a baseball game? When the Nationals came to town I was hoping that this practice of screaming during the Anthem would end. But we still have these idiots that feel it necessary to disgrace the Anthem with this interruption. So in the immortal words of Steve Hanson "I'm listening to the Fucking song!"

Today's Canadian was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia. At the age of 4 she began playing the piano. While in high school she played in local restaurants. She won a scholarship from the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she completed 3 terms. Returning to British Columbia she was discovered by bassist Ray Brown and Drummer Jeff Hamilton. They encouraged her to move to Los Angeles and study with Pianist Jimmy Rowles. In 1990 she relocated to New York City. In 1993 she released her first album. On Wednesday Dec 6 she gave birth to twins. Congratulations to Diana Krall and her husband Elvis Costello.

First of all after seeing the Anaheim (don't call me "mighty") Ducks, I regret not putting more money on them while I was in Vegas. Damn they are just good. They didn't give the Caps many opportunities to score. The Ducks are quick and their Defense is one of, if not the best in the league. They are a great team, but if the Caps get to play them again I am sure that the outcome will be different, or at least closer. Barra Brava made an appearance at the game on Friday. They sang and stood the entire game. They also were treated like public enemy number one, by the Verizon Center's rent a cops. Come on, why is it necessary to have security guards do that against fans of your own club? I hope security shows the same consideration to the Cryers on Saturday, though I know they will be nowhere to be found like normal.

This weekend I was able to catch up with some the beautiful women of the DC blogger world. It was great to see Sweet, Law-Rah, Buggie and Baby Banana during the weekend. Why do we have to go so long between our outings?

Last thing this weekend was the Washington vs. Philadelphia weekend, and what can I say, I had no problem with the outcome in any of the games. First Bullets vs. Sixers on Friday, never been too into basketball, but I like Arenas. Go Bullets! Saturday it was the Cryers and Caps. Caps win 5-3, decent game against a depleted team. Go Caps! Then it takes us to Sunday, Eagles vs the Deadskins. What can I say Thank God the Eagles got Garcia. With McNabb's propensity to get injured the past few years we needed another First String QB. Feeley is a decent QB, but only as a backup.

Now I am all for the pretty girls at sporting events. Hell, I still have fond memories of Phoenix's "The Pack". I do find it odd that they dance on the ice. But here is my beef, Rutgers; not only did I have to deal with hearing your band play the damn Superman theme a million times (don't you know how to play something anything else), but I had the huge baton girls in my sight lines. I mean who wants to see that? Thank God Navy QB Brian Hampton's injury happened early in the game so I could go back to tailgating.

Well, I guess the Capitals can read too. After Ray Emery made the comments to the press that he focuses on Ovie when he is on the ice, Ovie used the information to get 3 assists. His assist on Pettinger's goal was a thing of beauty. As for the officiating it was what I expected. Since I am a fan of both teams I am somewhat neutral. Yes there was some weird calls, but there always weird calls. It looked like the Sens were not ready for the speed of the Caps and they got called because of it. Yeah the officials were calling a tight game, but 10 penalties against the Sens and 9 against the Caps does not scream bias for or against either team. The Sens didn't get a rash of penalties together until the 3rd when they all but looked like they gave up.

Today's Canadian was inspired by the Christmas season. Born in Toronto Ontario on August 31, in either 1970 or 1973. His mother, who is also an actor, wanted her son to have a normal life. She kept her son from acting until his brother intervened. He has acted on TV with roles on shows like NCIS, Lost and Deadwood. He has also had roles in movies like "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" and "Jason vs Freddy". He stared for 3 season in the TV show "Titus". But the reason for this post is his first movie. For those of you that do not know Sonic, it is a Drive-In fast food joint. They serve pretty good food and shakes and the entire menu (breakfast and lunch) is available all day. Great when you want a breakfast burrito at 7:00 pm. Now my extreme like of Sonic may have been intensified by the fact that the nearest one to me is over 50 miles away. They say that absence makes the heart grow founder. So my question is why do I see commercials for Sonic in my local area? Come on guys and gals if you are not a national chain don't advertise Nationally. The only way it could be worse is if In-N-Out burgers started advertising here. Today's Canadian comes to us by request. My favorite Banana asked me to feature this Canadian. Born on May 15, 1981, one day earlier and a bunch of years after yours truly, in New Westminster British Columbia. He was voted the athlete of the year of his high school. In 1997 and 1998 he was a member of the Canadian National championship Baseball teams. In 1998 he was selected as the best hitter and catcher during the National Championship. After graduation of high school he chose not to attend College. He was picked by the Minnesota Twins in the 3rd round, 89th overall, in the 1999 MLB Draft. Making his debut on the Majors in 2003, though he spent most of the season with the Triple A Rochester Red Wings. In 2004 he started playing regularly with the Twins, playing 61 games. During his 2005 season he was plagued by off-season illnesses and was hit on the head by a pitch. Prior to the 2006 season he played for the Canadian team during the World Baseball Classic. Our Canadian's numbers for 2006 were pretty good. He hit .321 (6th in AL) and had 34 homers and 121 RBI's ( 2nd in AL). For this he was awarded the Silver Slugger for first base and the American League's MVP award. Our Canadian of the week is Justin Morneau.

First of all glad to be back and able to watch the Caps live. Checking scores over the cell phone is not the same as watching live. Thank God for the DVR, that way I can watch at least one of the games I missed. No need to watch the game against Carolina, but looking forward to watching Brashear's fight. Good to see Brash getting his first fighting penalty. Now all he needs is a goal.

Now for the Pet Peeve, what the hell is up with this?

Why do people still have and wear Puffnuts (Jagr) jerseys? He did shit while he was here. He admittedly did not play his hardest and what is worse is that the Caps are still paying part of his salary. So burn those things or at the minimum put some duct tape over the name.

Today's Canadian of the week was partially inspired by our flight home from Houston. This Canadian, born in Weston, Ontario, was a medical graduate from the University of Toronto. While he worked for the university's Banting and Best Medical Research Institute as a cancer researcher, he developed an idea that helps pilots. The original idea was a suit with water filled rubber bladders that aided pilots when they were executing high speed high G turns. Post this will be short and sporadic. DCSC and I are visiting family and we have limited Internet availability. Plus it's vacation.
I do want to say a couple things. I was very disappointed by DC United's loss on Sunday. I was at the game and it was exciting and I thought United played much better than the previous week. They just made one crucial mistake that let in a goal. After that it was all catch up and the Revs did a good job protecting their goal. They also got lucky on a number of occasions. United dominated most of the game, but just could not get the ball in the net.

Monday was another one. Since I was in class and not able to watch live I had to record it. Now if you don't already know I have split allegiances in regards to Ottawa and Washington. I support both teams. I have to say that the Caps come up slightly ahead, but only slightly. The outcome was something I could live with (both teams getting a point), but not the how. What has become of my beloved Sens. They played very cautious at the end. Spending the last period looking like the Devils, with the offsides trap. What were they thinking? You can't win in the "New NHL" with an old NHL mindset. Look how well it worked for the Cryers.

I am not a big fan of today's Canadian for reason that may be obvious at the end. This Canadian was born in Hamilton Ontario on October 25, 1912. During the Depression he sold encyclopedias across Canada to make money. In 1937 he was hired to manage a radio station from which he was able to amass his fortune. After World War II he purchased a AAA baseball team in Toronto named the Maple Leafs. In 1961 he moved to Los Angeles where he first purchased the Lakers for a then record price of 5.2 million dollars. Being a good Canadian he purchased the expansion rights for a NHL franchise. This team became the Los Angeles Kings. In 1974 he purchased the majority rights of the Redskins in Washington DC, where he would eventually move. If you don't know who this Canadian is and you live in Washington DC, get out from under your rock. This week's Canadian is Jack Kent Cooke.

So today I took a little detour in my travels during work, and stopped by Ashburn Ice House. It has been a few days since I have been to a game and I needed my live hockey fix. I was fortunate to arrive just as the Zamboni was leaving the ice and the players were starting to get on. Just a few of the players were on the ice and Brent Johnson was milling about near the locker room entrance. I notice him sign an autograph for a little boy, then disappeared near the locker room again. A couple moments later here comes Brent Johnson walking toward the ice wearing a mask. Not a goalie mask, but a Nacho Libre mask. Once he got on the ice he put his goalie mask on and began warming up. It was funny watching his teammates do a double take when he passes by them. So of all the times to forget my camera, I pick today. There is a shot I would have loved to get an autograph on. Here is a poor substitute, just add goalie pads, skates and a Caps jersey.

Congratulations are in order for a couple of DC United players. First congratulations to Troy Perkins for the Goaltender of the year award and Bobby Boswell for the Defender of the Year.

DCSC and I was able to make it to DC United's game against the Metropukes. DC United played like ass most of the game, but was able to come out of it with a favorable result. A 16 yr old scored a goal during this game, but his name was not Freddy Adu. Josmer Altidore the Metropukes striker looks pretty impressive. Adu looks like a 16 yr old, Altidore does not. He is a physically larger player, Adu looks like the same kid that he was when he arrived in DC. Unless Adu has a growth spurt and adds more strength, Altidore may become the future of US soccer.

Speaking about soccer, I came across a bit of the news of the weird. What if you started your first job. You are still a teenager and a bit of a party animal. What would you do if your employer told you that you need to settle down and get married? This is not a hypothetical, it is a true story. Bulgarian soccer club Litex Lovech ordered Ivelin Popov to get married within the year. This to curtain his violent behavior and womanizing ways. Does anyone in their right mind actually believe marriage will drastically alter his behavior?

Congrats to Richard Zednik on his two goal night. After getting pushed down to the "fourth line" Zed had a high energy night. Not that he does not usually play with high energy, it was just that last night he was able to finish. The past 10 games he has looked a little snake bit. He couldn't buy a goal. Great energy, but no finish or luck. Here is hoping that he can continue his scoring ways, and if so, we will be looking forward to Elliot in the Morning to have another "Zed Head" night.

Today's Canadian, is an actor that I have watched, and admired for years. Born June 9, 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta. Since his father served in the Canadian Armed Forces he moved throughout Canada. After his Father retired his family settled in Burnaby, British Columbia. He started his acting career on CBC's series "Leo and Me". At the age of 18 he moved to Los Angeles, where he got some guest roles on "Trapper John MD" and "Lou Grant". After a dry spell where he had to sell of parts of his sectional couch to make ends meet, he was able to land one of the roles that he is known for.

Despite strong opposition from then NBC executive Brandon Tartikoff, this actor was cast as a wise cracking republican teenager on a soon to be popular sitcom. His crossover to the big screen was equally popular. He was cast, this time, as a time traveling teenager who has to save his parents marriage. Since then he has appeared in numerous movie roles and in another TV sitcom where he was the deputy mayor of New York City.

In 1991 he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, but didn't make the announcement public until 1998. He still currently acts, but in guest roles. He is currently a strong advocate for Parkinson's research including stem cell research. His foundation was created to support and raise money for research.

If you haven't figured out who our Canadian is it is Micheal J. Fox. I have always found him to be a great actor and a much better human being. I admire his strength while living with this disease. I support his cause and hopefully more people will as well. Please help The Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Last night the Ottawa Senators had their way with the Toronto Maple Leafs. (It was a very satisfying win considering their previous meeting, shutout in their home opener 6 to 0. ) Things got a little scrappy when the Leafs started to realize things were out of their control. First Brian McGratten (Sens) and Wade Belak (Leafs) had a nice scrum. While in the box McGratten gestured that Belak was turtleing. Honestly, this was a hockey fight. Both guys jawed it up, and then dropped the gloves. What Darcy (Fucker) Tucker did later in the game was not, it was a typical Darcy Fucker move. After Tucker checked Patrick Eaves, which Tucker got the worst of it, Tucker dropped the gloves on Eaves. Tucker is considered a fighter and Eaves hasn’t fought since he was 16 yrs old. He is also the smallest and one of the younger players on the Sens, not the most even match. When Tucker was in the box he had to mimic McGratten’s gesture to Belak. Claiming Eaves was turtleing. The kid took it in stride. I like his comment after the game "He dropped his gloves and came after me," Eaves said. "I just had to defend myself." So Tucker goes after the smallest guy on the Sens to rev up his team then tries to ad insult to injury by insulting him. Nice Asshole. Let’s see if the pussy Tucker will try for an actual fight on Thursday night against McGratten or Chris Neil.

Power and Power plays.

Originally this post was to bust on the Capitals tepid power play. How things have changed. On a crappy night of hockey on Saturday against the Lightning, the Capitals were 2 for 3 on the power play. They were also 6 for 7 in the penalty kill. Very impressive. The only problem was all the defensive lapses while they were 5 on 5. Kolzig looked out of sorts and not his normal self. The Richards goal was the saddest thing I have seen this year. Total monentem killer. Game over.

Now since we were talking about power plays why on God's earth is it now the "Pepco Power Play"? It is starting to drive me nuts. First it was the naming of the stadiums, now it's the power play and opening pitch. At some point, someone has to say enough is enough.

Speaking of power, what is up with Metro. Why does the Metro headquarters have to have all its lights on 24 hours a day 365 days a year, when there is no one working in these offices. It drives me absoulely bonkers. Metro raises it rates anually, and is changeing the tile shapes to save money, but they can't turn the lights off ever. What kind of screwed up organization is this?

So I am reading today’s Washington Post Express and I got Robert Flack and Donny Hathaway’s “Where is the Love?” stuck in my head. In the Sports “Today’s TV Lineup” we have listed College football on ESPN, Baseball’s NLCS on Fox and on Fox Sports Net, High School Football. I guess the Washington Capitals are not televised on Comcast tonight. What is it that I am watching? It must be an aberration. Ted Leonsis has the right idea to give Bloggers more access, since you can’t even count on the Major Media types to let us know that the Capitals are playing. What is going on in Edmonton and why is Ryan Smyth wearing that Jacket? Well in 2003-2004 the players on the Calgary Flames awarded each other a Green hard hat to signify which of them was considered the games top performer in a win. That hat landed in Toronto's Hockey hall of Fame. Now that the "Green Hat" is immortalized, they continued the practice in 2005-2006 with the Golden Hard hat. This year it is a "red tacky tie" that is the trophy of choice. Not to be undone by its Alberta rival, Edmonton Oilers have the "jacket". The eighties style jacket is awarded to the Oilers top performer. So which trophy will have the greater motivational factor? I personally like the Jacket. Who wouldn't fight hard to possess that? The fur collar will be great during the long Canadian winter.

Since I was in training outside of Chicago last week I could not keep up my posts. The training was good, but it took me away from my beautiful wife too long. Since I have been back I have been making up for lost time. First I was able to sit in on an airing of the Sport Journey Radio show. Very cool that my wife gets to hang and talk sports everyday. I do it as well but nobody willingly spends time out of their day to listen to it.

After the radio show we were able to meet up with some fellow bloggers at a blogger happy hour. It was good to see some old friends and meet new ones. Looking forward to the next one.

The next day was game day heaven. Waking up early and hitting Annapolis to catch Navy homecoming. Six years in the Army I have no love loss for the Navy, but the rout by Rutgers was not what I was hoping for. Dislocated his knee and possible ACL tear. Didn't know a knee could bend like that. Ouch! Here is hoping he will recover. After the game DCSC and our friends headed to the Phone booth to watch the Caps take on the Trashers. Thanks to Mr Smooth for the great seats.

The Caps played pretty well, but the defense still drives me a little nuts. The Sims goal I could feel happening before it actually did. They were playing on their heals at times, but not as bad a last year. Good to see 2 balanced lines come out and play. One bitch other that the loss is the in house replay, or lets say lack of replay. What the hell is wrong with showing a replay of a non-goal. I had to go home and tape the re-air of the game just to see it. Why couldn't they show it then and there instead of doing some stupid "Delta Dental smile camera". Let us know what is going on! Do I have to stay home and watch the game on TV so I can know what is going on? From my angle it looked like it went in, but then it was called off. Why can't they show that? Very aggravating. On a high note we had a new group head in the stadium. A group of Screaming Eagles helped make a half empty Phone booth an entertaining place. Their chanting and cheering was quite refreshing. I love the crossover hopefully we will se an encore preformance. Hell maybe I will have to renew my SE membership.

Talking about crossover. After watching a disappointing Eagles loss to a very talented Saints team. (Bet nobody is calling them Aints anymore, I'm not. ) DCSC and I headed to RFK to watch the DC United play the Chicago Fire. Now if you haven't been paying attention, DC United came out on all cylinders this season. But as of late they seems to have lost a bit of steam. Before the All-Star break they were 15-2-6 after they were 2-6-6. This does not bode well for the playoffs. United's first opponent is the hated Metropukes. Now that they have Bruce Arena they are a major threat. If they can pass that test they will more than likely have to play the team that has their number the past two years. The same Chicago Fire we saw today. If they played same as today, it will be another year without the MLS championship.

Today we have Dr. James Naismith. Dr Naismith was born in 1861 near Almonte Ontario. He served as the Athletic director of McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He then became a physical education teacher at the YMCA international Training School, which became Springfield University in Massachusetts. Why should we care about this man from Ontario?

In 1891, while serving at the YMCA he developed a game that is played throughout the world. Looking for a game that will could be played indoors during the cold winter months he devoloped the 13 rules for a new game. The new game Dr Naismith founded is called Basketball.

Yesterday ESPNradio's Amy Lawrence was heard on air saying " If Hockey was exciting, and people wanted to watch it on TV, I guarantee ESPN would carry it." Oh really? So ESPN only carries the exciting "sports" I don't want to go into a diatribe about the definition of Sport, but many of the "sports" ESPN feature are competitions not a sport. But only exciting sports?

Now I don't want to dis on what other people enjoy watching. I personally would rather watch grass grow than watching such "sports" as bass fishing, world strongest man, bowling, pool, cheerleading, fat guy answering sport questions, Paintball, Dominos, spelling bee and scrabble championships. How many of those so called sports are exciting? I may watch poker on a occasion, but I would never in a million years call it exciting. Interesting yes, but never exciting.

Ms. Lawrence why do you find it necessary to ridicule someone else's favorite sport. I can think of better ways to cheese up to the ESPN brass than that. If you are trying to emulate Tony Kornheiser, don't. He has put his time in the world of sports reporting and he has grown into the respectable and lovable gasbag that he is. You, yea No.

ESPN is a business and the decision to have hockey on, is not about who is watching, but how much it is paying. I mean NHL has more viewership than the WNBA, but ESPN carries that. The only reason the WNBA is still aired on ESPN is because the WNBA's partnership with the NBA. Does anyone really think their ratings are that good? Please. I think more people watch the World Poker tour.

Got to say it again, I love hockey season. To make it even better is to watch it in HD. NOTHING can be finer. I was able to watch most of three different games tonight. The best in my book had to be the Sens vs. Leafs. What can be better than watching the Prime Minister support the losing team. I was very impressed with Gerber's performance. I will be looking forward to many more. Oh, by the way Sens won 4 to 1. The other game at the same time was a good battle as well. Carolina and Buffalo. First of all what the Fuck is up with Buffalo's uniform? I think it beats Atlanta for ugliest uniform. You decide.

The game was a good one. Real tight. I thought both goalies did very well, but in the end someone has to win. At least what the say in the "New NHL" Buffalo wins in a shootout. I guess Buffalo gets some revenge on the Canes beating them in the conference final. I would rather have the Cup than one win.

The last game of the night is Colorado vs. Dallas. As I write this it is tied 2-2. The Avs ruled the beginning of the game, but it seam that Dallas finally woke up. Former Capital Halpern has not been impressive, not 4 million dollar impressive. Didn't realize that barneypussy (barnaby) is in Dallas, that guy is still an ass. Didn't think I would need another reason to hate Dallas.

It feels a little like Christmas.

You remember when you were a kid and couldn't wait till Santa's visit. This is how I feel right now. The first face-off is less than 24 hours away. With the beginning of the season I feel I must give my predictions.

First the Western Conference Finals This is going to be a slug fest out west, but I think the two left standing will be Anaheim and Nashville.

For the Eastern Conference Finals it is going to be tough as well. But in the end I think it will be the Ottawa and Carolina.

The Stanley Cup finals will have Anaheim and Ottawa.

And my winner is Ottawa.

Granted I hedged my bet. While I was in Vegas I put money down on the Ducks to win. 12 to 1 odds, not bad. So either way I win. So let hear it for me loosing money on my bet.

DCSC and I came home from an entertaining and interesting visit to the Big Easy. New Orleans for those not in the know. Our visit to N.O. was much anticipated. Not only because of our beloved friends' wedding, but it gave me an opportunity to visit a city I enjoyed visiting when I was a younger and single man. Going in I did not know what to expect. How bad was the damage? What was open? Would I recognize it? Glad to say that I did recognize the city as such. Especially from a distance. Most of my experience is from the airport to the French Quarter with the Garden district and Metairie. I have never been East of the French Quarter. From my understanding this is where most of the devastation occurred.
My first impression from the airplane. Damn, Lake Pontchartrain is bigger than I remember. I was also pleased to see the Causeway bridge is back in business. As we get over land I see the famous blue tarps on houses, but not as many as I would have thought. Driving in to downtown things looked pretty normal. Rush hour traffic and highway construction. But you got to look at the little things. Look down the neighborhood streets and you will more than likely see a couple FEMA trailers parked on peoples lawn. Also the many open lots you see will be converted into trailer parks, some look semi permanent. First impressions of the French Quarter was that it looked and smelled the same. Strike that. Worse if you are near a construction dumpster. Bourbon St. has many more stip joints than I remember. I mean Hustler has three clubs on the street alone. Different. so which one is the ugly one?
Our first day in N.O. was spent doing the touristy things that bring you there. Wake up and head to Cafe du Monde. Got to get my chicory coffee and Beignets. I knew people where heading back to the city to help it out, but who knew that Santa was going to be in town. Hopefully he is bringing some early Christmas presents. Santa I want a Sens or Caps Stanley Cup

We were also to enjoy some wonderful meals in some of my favorite restaurants in the world. Mother's and Brennan's are a must when in New Orleans. Also check out Yo Mamma's and try the Voodoo daiquiri at Lafitte's Blacksmith shop. But in general you can not go wrong any place you go.

Back to the Katrina affect. To notice it big time take a walk on Canal St. The main avenue just outside the Quarter. This area was hit hard. Some by the flooding, some by the wind, but also by looting. I remember this as a busy shopping area. Now many if not most of the shops are boarded up. As you head up Canal towards the SuperDome you notice it more and more. Empty office buildings and store fronts. Blown out windows and closed shops. The topper of what we saw up close is just next door to the Dome. The empty Hyatt and the New Orleans Centre (shopping mall).

New Orleans being the first in my mind to own the motto " What goes on in... Stays in...." still lives up to it. Bourbon though not as busy as I think it should be is still the party zone. I mean where else can you see someone passed out ( at least I hope he was only passed out) in the street at 2:00pm.

This just in. T.O. is hospitalized for attempted suicide.

Now let me put this out there. As an Eagles fan I have no problem reveling in T.O.'s pain, but as a person who lost a close friend to suicide I need to look at the bigger picture. I know it is early and all the talking heads are flapping their gums without knowing shit. I find it quite possible that something happened that may look like a suicide, but I don't think it was. Something may have happened other than that. With what we know of T.O. we know he will do anything to get himself in game shape. Something that may include mixing "supplements" and pain meds. Mixing medications can have devastating outcomes. It can make a rational person do irrational things. Not to say that I ever thought Owens was rational, but lets not jump to conclusions. Let's hope he is OK, but not that OK. I still think he is a Jackass.

NASCAR, not for me.

Couple weeks ago I won a NASCAR prize pack. Part of the prize was two tickets to any NASCAR race. Since it didn't include transportation, DCSC and I pick Dover in beautiful (as DCSC calls it) slower Delaware. This was our first trip into the auto race world. I tried to go in with an open mind, but I do have my preconceived notions. Some of which were confirmed. First it was a very Caucasian affair. Not many people of color were in attendance. Though I did see a couple working the pit crews and security. I also thought it was a very southern and redneck thing. The Confederate flag was seen in many places, but to my surprise I saw quite a few Canadian as well. The first person we spoke with was a couple of guys that drove down from outside Ottawa. Now that is a hell of a drive. After that we decided to pay attention to where people came from. The winner for farthest had to be Nova Scotia. Guess it is not a southern thing, but sure was a redneck thing. Hell, mullets, sleeve-less t-shirts on very big men and hunters cammo gear were seen in abundance. Wish we could have go a picture of the trio of rotund guys all shirtless hanging by their trailer sporting the zz top beards. Priceless.

Part of thing I don't get with it is how do you pick your driver? I know in the sports I follow it is all about home teams. I follow teams in places I lived or live. I ( as Seinfeld says) root for laundry. I like players and cheer for them when they are on my team, but go to an enemy team I will pray for your demise. NASCAR does not have home teams, and most of the drivers are defiantly not from my neck of the woods. That leaves picking a sponsor and then rooting for that team. I can't cheer for a commercial product. Go Tide Go. Doesn't ring. I liken NASCAR to WWE. It seems that the drama behind the scene is just as important than what happens on the track. WWE and NASCAR both seem like soap operas for rednecks. I don't know which is more scripted.

Over all it was entertaining. Fifty dollars worth entertainment, don't know. But if anyone gives me another ticket I would attend. I mean what other stadium event lets you bring in your own food and beer. At least it got that going for it.

This is just a side note, DCSC noticed this on the way back to the Jeep and we had to take a picture. Somebody is sure going to be PO'd that they messed with his girlfriend.

When is nationalism bad?

After reading the Posts article on the next possible Japanese Prime Minister , I couldn't help but be a little concerned. It angers me and frighten me that this may be the next PM in Japan. Ignoring the past is dangerous. Rewriting the past is just malicious. It seems that the Japanese can honor War Criminals and suffer no consequence. Would it be OK if the German Prime Minister paid her respect at the grave of somebody like Himmler? No! There would be an international outrage. So why is it OK to honor Generals and leaders that masterminded the Bataan Death march, Rape of Nanking, "scientific testing" on POWs, plus many many more? I don't see a problem with being proud of ones country. But when nationalism clouds how one treats other people, there can be problems.

So now that at least 24 hours separate me and the debacle that was the Eagles game. I can at least look on the bright side. What is the bright side you may ask. Well at least the coach took the blame.

"This loss is my responsibility....I was too conservative," Reid said. "I could have been a little more aggressive that second half."

I am only OK with that, if he does not do it again. I am tired of conservative play calling. He should have run up the score, hell at least get yourself a better cushion that 10 to 17 points.

Now to the bright side. The Redskins lose, Again. Now the topper could have been if the Cowboys lose as well, but since they were playing each other, er ah well. I can settle with B.O. having a 3 for 19 yrds day, plus breaking a bone in his hand. Would have been better if he broke that leg again, but a guy can't get everything.

So Last night DCSC and a few friends went to the State theater and saw a great concert. The show was an all girl Led Zeppelin Tribute band with the name Lez Zeppelin. What can be better than that. One of my all time favorite band's music played by some very talented women. Totally Kick Ass! But seeing this got me thinking. Why does Clay Aiken and his American Idol cohorts have a multi-million dollar career?

Wasn't it about a month ago that we were looking a gas prices over $3.00? BP just shut down the Alaska pipe line and the Iranians were threatening to cut their oil production. So why did I pay $2.15 a gallon for gas yesterday?

A bit of a side note. Why is it that Comcast sent us our bill and charged us for the privilege to watch the Nats, but we still can't see a game? WTF!!!
